    La crisis del COVID-19 es eminentemente una crisis urbana. El enorme impacto socioeconómico de la pandemia se concentra en las ciudades y ya ha traído importantes cambios en su funcionamiento y en el estilo de vida de sus habitantes. En este contexto, algunos expertos destacan las vulnerabilidades inherentes de las ciudades y su papel en la expansión del virus y pronostican una transformación radical —e incluso un declive— de las mismas. Para otros, ahora más que nunca, el futuro de la humanidad será urbano y esta crisis servirá para fortalecer la resiliencia de las ciudades de cara a futuras amenazas. Reconociendo la importancia que tendrá esta crisis en el futuro urbano y del planeta, el presente artículo realiza un repaso por los impactos de la pandemia en las ciudades y la respuesta institucional, analiza los elementos clave de esta crisis para el futuro de las ciudades y presenta la oportunidad de aprovechar el contexto actual para impulsar una diplomacia urbana efectiva.

    The COVID-19 crisis is primarily an urban crisis. Cities are bearing the brunt of the pandemic, which has generated severe economic and human losses, and transformed city living. Against this backdrop, some experts highlight the inherent vulnerabilities of cities and their role in spreading the virus, anticipating a radical urban transformation, or even a decline. Meanwhile, some experts believe that, increasingly, cities will hold the key to our future, and see the current crisis as an opportunity to build the resilience of cities against future threats. While highlighting the critical importance of the COVID-19 crisis for the future of cities and the planet, this article provides an overview of the impacts of the pandemic on cities and the response from public institutions, conducts an analysis of key takeaways from the crisis for the future of cities, and discusses the opportunity presented by the crisis to advance effective urban diplomacy.
