Esta revisión presenta los aspectos básicos para la educación en diabetes, haciendo énfasis en el logro del autocuidado del paciente a través del conocimiento profundo de sus características individuales (nivel de instrucción, socioeconómico, culturas, sus intereses y preocupaciones) que permitan orientar el proceso educativo para alcanzar los objetivos propuestos. Se plantean algunas razones por las cuales el diabético debe ser educado, cómo hacerlo y las dificultades que puede encontrar el profesional al cuidado del enfermo en el proceso educativo. Es responsabilidad del equipo de salud aunar esfuerzos para mejorar el pronóstico de la diabetes mediante la aplicación de mecanismos eficaces de prevención ya existentes y la elaboración de nuevas estrategias a los niveles primario, secundario y terciario en donde la educación es la piedra angular.

This review presents the basic aspects for the education in diabetes, making enphasis in the self-care profit of the patient throughthe deep knowledge of individual characteristics (instruction and socioeconomic level, cultures, interests and worries) that allowto guide the educational process for reaching the objectives. Some reasons are planned by which the diabetic patient should beeducated, how to do it and the difficulties that the professional can find by caring for the ill patient in the educational process. Itis responsibility of the health team to void efforts to improve the diabetes forecast by the application of effective preventionmechanisms and the manufacture of new estrategies to the primary, secondary and tertiary levels, where education is thecornerstone.
