El Hospital de Caridad y otras instituciones sanitarias de La Unión: 1860-1910,

    Desde el nacimiento del municipio de La Unión los accidentados por los trabajos mineros en la Sierra Minera eran trasladados, con cargo al presupuesto municipal, al Hospital de Caridad de Cartagena, agravándose la salud, o produciéndose en muchos casos la muerte por la falta de asistencia facultativa previa, el movimiento de la camilla del carruaje y el polvo del camino. Por esa razón, en marzo de 1878 la corporación municipal autorizó la construcción del Hospital de Caridad de La Unión, que se inauguró en julio de 1883. Además, en los primeros cincuenta primeros años del municipio se puso en marcha un «hospital de sangre» en Portman y varias instituciones sanitarias para atender las diversas epidemias que sufrió el municipio.

    Since the birth of the municipality of La Unión, those injured by mining work in the Sierra Minera mountains were transferred, at the expense of the municipal budget, to the Charity Hospital in Cartagena, worsening their health, or in many cases dying due to the lack of medical assistance, to the swaying of the carriage stretcher and to the dust of the road. For that reason, in March 1878, the municipal corporation authorized the construction of the Charity Hospital of La Unión, which was inaugurated in July 1883. In addition, in the first fifty years of the municipality it was launched a «blood hospital» in Portman, together with several other health institutions to attend to the various epidemics that the municipality suffered.
