Notas sobre el cierre de la Universidad de Murcia en 1929

    Es posible trazar un paralelismo entre el devenir histórico de la UMU y los importantes cambios en el acontecer de la política española durante el primer tercio del siglo XX. Desde su fundación en 1915, la Universidad de Murcia hubo de recorrer un camino difícil y tortuoso tanto en el orden económico como académico, incluyendo la escasa matrícula de estudiantes.

    La amenaza de cierre era permanente, haciéndose efectiva en 1929 durante el directorio militar de Primo de Rivera, dentro del plan de reforma universitaria promovido por el ministro de Instrucción, E. Callejo. Esta decisión motivó la dimisión del rector J. Loustau. Afortunadamente, el periodo de clausura fue breve. Siendo los hechos bien conocidos, no lo son tanto la actuación y reacciones de la propia universidad. A través de las actas disponibles de la Junta de Gobierno, es posible documentar ese periodo crítico. Al respecto, resulta muy sorprendente, que en ningún momento, el Patronato Universitario llegara a debatir el problema y a emitir un pronunciamiento sobre la clausura.

    It is feasible to draw a parallel between the historical evolution followed by the University of Murcia (UMU) and the important changes in the events of Spanish politics during the first third of the XX century. From the beginning, the long-cherished institution set up in 1915 had to go through a difficult and tortuous way, both in the economic and academic order, including low student enrollment. The threat of closure was permanent and became effective in 1929 during the military directory established by Primo de Rivera, within the University reform plan promoted by the Minister of Education, E. Callejo. This decision caused the resignation of the rector J. Loustau. Fortunately, the step of closing was short. Although these facts are well-known, less so are the responses and actions emanating from the University itself. Through the available minutes of the Governing Council, it is possible to document this crucial period. In this regard, it is rather surprising that at no time the University Board will come to debate the question and issue a statement on the closure.
