The aim of this communication is the development of an agricultural system that would involve the production of energy crops and the use of their biomass for in-situ energy applications. In the framework of the current project PROBIOCOM (RTA2012-0082-CO2), which is located in the The Encín farm (Alcala of Henares, province of Madrid, Spain), rainfed and irrigated crops have been experimented. This article presents the methodology followed in PROBIOCOM and reports the progress of the work regarding the energy crops of giant reed, cardoon and Siberian elm, besides the utilization of surplus biomass (straw) from conventional cereal crops. Concerns about climate change, energy supply, geopolitical instability of countries producing fosil fuels and forecasted depletion of fossil energy sources have promoted an intense activity in the research field of the renewable energies. The in-situ use of the biomass produced in a farm potentially has many advantages since it would allow to optimize the energy demand of the farm with the production of biomass and its distribution or logistics, this way balancing the energy needs of the farm.
