El tendido y desarrollo del sistema ferroviario en Argentina ha tenido luces y sombras. En el presente trabajo buscamos dar cuenta de las transformaciones de este medio de transporte, sus cambios de propiedad y el modo en que se fue estructurando en el siglo XIX, así como su desenvolvimiento a lo largo del siglo XX. Este ferrocarril, que llegó a ser uno de los más extensos de América del Sur en la segunda mitad del siglo XX, fue perdiendo territorialidad a la par que su rentabilidad fue disminuyendo. En un panorama mundial en el que el pedido de sustentabilidad del medio ambiente es central, ¿qué lugar puede ocupar el ferrocarril? Hoy se nos abren muchos interrogantes que hacia fines del siglo XX y menos aún si pensamos en el siglo XIX, no estaban presentes. De allí la importancia que le asignamos a revisitar la construcción del sistema en sus logros y limitaciones.

The laying and development of the railway system in Argentina has had its ups and downs. In this paper we seek to give an account of this means of transport, its changes of ownership and the way in which it was structured in the 19th century as well as its development throughout the 20th century. This railway, which became one of the largest in South America in the second half of the 20th century, gradually lost its territoriality as its profitability declined. In a world scenario in which the demand for environmental sustainability is central, what place can the railway occupy? Today, many questions are open to us that were not present at the end of the 20th century, and even less so if we think of the 19th century. Hence the importance we attach to revisiting the construction of the system in its achievements and limitations.
