Resumen
Russian new nationalism is considered in this paper as set of ideas, conservative values and populist strategies which are used by political elite to ensure their political survival. There is no unique concept of this ideology.
To understand this complex phenomenon, we should first understand what does the word “Russian” mean when we speak about new nationalism. The English word “Russian” has two meanings: ‘russkiy’ which means ‘ethnically Russian’ and ‘rossiskiy’ which refers to civic Russian state identity. Therefore, two approaches to new Russian nationalism can be identified.
The first—Russian ethnonationalism which places primary emphasis on promotion of the interests and culture of Russians as ethnic group being opposed to those of other nations. Official state nationalism is the reflection of the second approach to Russian new nationalism. It is based on two fundamental ideas: maintaining Russia as a strong state and protecting ethnic Russians in near abroad.
