El Protoevangelio de Santiago, un texto apócrifo datado en torno al siglo II AD, describe la historia de la concepción y nacimiento de María y Jesús. El autor del escrito también retrata brevemente a José, el cual tiene la función de cuidar y proteger a María. Desde una perspectiva critico-narrativo, este artículo explora la vida de José en este texto no canónico. Literariamente, el ensayo examina la caracterización que el narrador realiza de este personaje, al prestar atención al uso de dos técnicas narrativas: “telling” y “showing”. El término “Telling” se refiere a como el narrador declara, usando su propia voz narrativa, los rasgos característicos que el personaje tiene. La técnica del “Showing” muestra la manera en que esos trazos descriptivos operan en la vida y accionar del personaje estudiado. El trabajo evidencia como el texto apócrifo emplea la figura de José como un recurso apologético de María, quien sirve de guardián y testigo del rol que ella tiene en la concepción y nacimiento de Jesús.

The Protoevangelium of James, an apocryphal text dated around the second-century AD, describes the story of Mary and Jesus’ conception and birth. The author of the writing also depicts the story of Joseph briefly, who takes care and protects Mary. From a critical narrative perspective, this article explores the life of Joseph in this non-canonical text. Literarily, this essay examines the characterization that the narrator does of this character, by paying attention to the use of two narrative techniques: “telling” and “showing.” The term “telling” refers to how the narrator declares the traits the character has, by using his or her own narrative voice. The technique of “showing” displays the way these traits function in the life and actions of the studied character. The article evidences how the text employs the figure of Joseph as an apologetic resource of Mary, who serves as guardian and witness of Mary’s role in the conception and birth of Jesus.
