“Ingenua, graciosa, ideal”: el debut madrileño de María Barrientos (1901) en la prensa española

    Actualmente, muchas de las grandes voces líricas logran cosechar mayores y más tempranos éxitos en Italia, la cuna de la ópera, que en su país natal. Esta situación no es nueva, pues María Barrientos, la soprano española más internacional del primer tercio del siglo XX, que contó con visibilidad y reconocimiento en su Barcelona natal siendo muy joven, solo alcanzó la fama y la celebridad en todo el país tras haber triunfado en los principales teatros italianos. ¿Cómo fue referenciado ese precoz éxito internacional en España? ¿Cómo fue recibida la artista en la siguiente actuación realizada en suelo patrio? Mediante el acceso a fuentes primarias y secundarias, en este trabajo realizamos un acercamiento a la cantante María Barrientos y presentamos las circunstancias que rodearon su primera actuación en España tras haber triunfado en el extranjero, hecho que coincidió con su debut en el Teatro Real de Madrid en 1901.

    At present, many of the great lyrical voices achieve greater and earlier successes in Italy, the core of opera, than in their country of origin. This situation is not new, because María Barrientos, the most international Spanish soprano of the first third of the 20 th century, who already had visibility and recognition in her native Barcelona when she was very young, only achieved fame and celebrity in her country after having triumphed in the main Italian theatres.

    How was her precocious international success referenced in Spain? How was the artist received in the following performance held on her country? Through primary and secondary sources, we offer an approach to the singer María Barrientos and we present the circumstances surrounding her first performance in Spain after having triumphed abroad, a fact that coincided with her debut at the Teatro Real of Madrid in 1901.
