La retórica en el mundo náhuatl

    La retórica tuvo una importancia excepcional en la vida de los antiguos nahuas del Altiplano Central del territorio mexicano. Lo anterior se manifiesta en el léxico especializado en este campo en lengua original, en los productos que se conservan de esa práctica discursiva y en su enseñanza como disciplina. Si consideramos este último aspecto, podremos percatarnos de que la retórica no solo fue un instrumento práctico en la vida civil, social y religiosa del pueblo azteca, sino que se convirtió en una verdadera disciplina aplicada en la formación de los jóvenes nobles de la elite gobernante. Para mostrar lo anterior se cuenta con las referencias a la enseñanza de esta disciplina en el calmécac y, sobre todo, se conservan los famosos huehuetlahtolli, que pueden ser considerados como modelos para la enseñanza de los discursos desde el seno familiar hasta la muerte. Este trabajo estudia desde la óptica occidental de la retórica el carácter educativo y formativo de la retórica nahua, con la finalidad de revalorar esas prácticas equiparables en cuanto a su importancia a las prácticas del mundo clásico de Grecia y Roma, pero que muestran también elementos propios y novedosos que enriquecen esa disciplina. Se ponen a discusión algunos problemas en relación con la autenticidad y la función de los huehuetlahtolli.

    Rhetoric was of exceptional importance in the life of ancient Nahuas of Central Highlands of the Mexican territory. It is manifested in the specialized lexicon in this field in their original language, in the products preserved from this discursive practice and in its teaching as a discipline. If we consider this last aspect, we will be able to realize rhetoric was not only a practical instrument in civil, social, and religious life of the Aztec people, but also became a true discipline applied in the training of young nobles of the ruling elite. To show it, there are references to the teaching of this discipline in the Calmécac and, above all, the famous huehuetlahtolli are preserved, which can be considered as models for teaching of discourses from the family bosom until the death. This work studies the educational and formative nature of nahuatl rhetoric from the western perspective of rhetoric, in order to revalue these practices comparable in terms of their importance to the practices of the classical world of Greece and Rome, but which also show their own and novel elements that enrich that discipline. Some issues are raised regarding the authenticity and function of the huehuetlahtolli.
