Resumen de Fray Juan Bernal y la fundación del convento de La Merced de Gibraltar en las fuentes historiográficas del siglo XVII

  Este trabajo es continuación de otro titulado “Fray Rodrigo de Arce y la fundación del convento mercedario de Gibraltar en las fuentes documentales del siglo XVI”(Quintana, 2014), en el que quedó de manifiesto la falta de evidencias documentales que atestigüen la participación de fray Juan Bernal en la fundación, a pesar de lo que sostuvo la historiografía mercedaria del XVII. Pretendemos aquí poner en orden los hechos que nos presentan dichos relatos, que agrupamos en dos tradiciones, correspondientes a sendas versiones de los hechos, una de amplia difusión impresa iniciada por fray Bernardo de Vargas y otra basada en la memoria de fray Andrés de Portes, discípulo de Bernal, que se mantuvo manuscrita e inédita, teniendo en cuenta la intencionalidad de ambas y el contexto en el que se produjeron. Por último, pretendemos establecer las fuentes que pudieron haber informado las noticias sobre la fundación del convento que Alonso Hernández del Portillo ofrece en su Historia de Gibraltar y su relación con ambas corrientes historiográficas.

  This work follows on from another entitled “Fray Rodrigo de Arce and the foundation of the Mercedarian convent of Gibraltar in the documentary sources of the 16th century” (Quintana, 2014), in which the lack of documentary evidence attesting to the participation of Fray Juan Bernal in the foundation was made clear, in spite of what the 17th century Mercedarian historiography maintained. We intend here to present the facts of these accounts, which we have grouped into two traditions, corresponding to the two versions of the events, one that was widely published in print and was started by Fray Bernardo de Vargas and the other based on the report of Fray Andrés de Portes, a disciple of Bernal, which was kept handwritten and unpublished, taking into account the intention of both and the context in which they were produced. Finally, we intend to establish the sources that may have informed the news about the foundation of the convent that Alonso Hernández del Portillo offers in his History of Gibraltar and its relationship with both historiographical trends.
