Resumen de «Liberales con Fraga»: de la Unión Liberal (UL) al Partido Liberal (PL)

  Cuando, llegadas las elecciones de 1982, Manuel Fraga y Alianza Popular (AP) emprendieron su búsqueda de esa supuesta «mayoría natural» contraria al socialismo, pronto contaron con la colaboración de los democristianos. Los grandes ausentes de aquella inicial coalición fueron los liberales, por lo que Fraga no tardó en vertebrar desde la propia AP ese brazo liberal que le faltaba. Así surgió Unión Liberal (UL), posteriormente refundada como Partido Liberal (PL). Estos liberales profraguistas se convirtieron en los mayores representantes del neoliberalismo español, aunque su dependencia de una AP que los había creado con fines meramente instrumentales, los condenó a una compleja trayectoria –con la falta de un auténtico proyecto independiente y una ausencia de liderazgos estables– que solo superaron con la refundación de la derecha

  When the elections of 1982 arrived, Manuel Fraga and People’s Alliance (AP) began their search of a non-socialist «natural majority» in which they had the collaboration of the Christian Democrats. The great absentees of that initial coalition were the Liberals, reason why Fraga created from the own AP that liberal group that it needed to its coalition. This is how Liberal Union (UL) emerged, later re-founded as Liberal Party (PL). These pro-Fraga liberals became the main representatives of Spanish neoliberalism.

  Their dependence of AP, that had created them for purely instrumental purposes, condemned them to a complex trajectory –with the lack of a real independent project and absence of stable leaderships– that only surpassed with the re-foundation of the political right.
