El artículo explora la obra de Rafael Merry del Val y Zulueta, secretario de Estado de Pío X (1903-1914) y protagonista de la condena al modernismo y la represión de los modernistas. Posteriormente trabajó como secretario del Santo Oficio hasta su muerte (1930). Merry del Val no parece haber compartido todas las posiciones de los exponentes del más amargo integralismo católico, pero el cardenal anglo-español siempre fue inflexible en su aversión a cualquier intento de renovar los contenidos y formas del cristianismo católico y hacia las primeras fermentos ecuménicos, durante sus décadas de servicio a la Santa Sede.

The article explores the work of Rafael Merry del Val y Zulueta, Secretary of State of Pius X (1903-1914) and protagonist of the condemnation of modernism and the repression of the modernists. Later he worked as secretary of the Holy Office until his death (1930). Merry del Val does not seem to have shared all the positions of the exponents of the most bitter Catholic integralism, but the Anglo-Spanish cardinal was always inflexible in his aversion to any attempt to renew the contents and forms of Catholic Christianity and towards the first ecumenical ferments, during his decades of service to the Holy See.
