En la Primera Conferencia de Consenso sobre el anciano maltratado, celebrada en España en 1995, se acuerda definir maltrato al anciano como: “ Cualquier acto u omisión que produzca daño, intencionado o no, practicado sobre personas de 65 y más años, que ocurra en el medio familiar, comunitario o institucional, que vulnere o ponga en peligro la integridad física, psíquica, así como el principio de autonomía o el resto de los derechos fundamentales del individuo, constatable, objetivamente o percibido subjetivamente».
El propio término «maltrato» está cargado de connotaciones negativas que lo han convertido en tabú: no se habla del problema, se evita o no se reconoce, y así no existe. Tenemos que reconocer que en los últimos años se han ido dejando de lado los prejuicios y miedos que este tema entrañaba y se han hecho avances en la denuncia, detección precoz, diagnóstico, tratamiento, y en la concienciación social del problema.

At the First Consensus Conference on the Abused Elderly, held in Spain in 1995, it was agreed to define elder abuse as: «Any act or omission that causes harm, intentional or not, practiced on persons aged 65 and over, occurring in the family, community or institutional environment, that violates or endangers the physical or psychological integrity, as well as the principle of autonomy or the rest of the fundamental rights of the individual, objectively ascertainable or subjectively perceived.» The very term «maltreatment» is loaded with negative connotations that have made it taboo: the problem is not spoken of, avoided or not recognized, and thus does not exist. We must recognize that in recent years the prejudices and fears that this issue entailed have been set aside and progress has been made in reporting, early detection, diagnosis, treatment and social awareness of the problem.
