Resumen de A complementary reading of the documentary "Lusofonia, a (r)evolução": musical performances and migrant communities

Bart Paul Vanspauwen

  • This paper seeks to analyze the role of the Red Bull Music Academy’s documentary Lusofonia, a (r)evolução (2006) in promoting Lusofonia within the scope of its institutional goals. I thereby explore the connection between the concept of Lusofonia and notions of multiculturality and cosmopolitanism. Lusofonia, a (r)evolução mostly shows established musicians within the context of the recording industry. Music making and social transformations among Lusophone migrants, however, are largely omitted. I aim to cast further light on the ways the concept of Lusofonia informs music making in Lisbon through analysis of interviews with Lusophone migrant musicians that perform in the city’s circuit of bars, restaurants and voluntary associations.
