    Inmediatamente despus de la eleccin del 6 de julio de1997, por encargo del CIDE se levant ima encuesta nacional sobre losmotivos de los encuestados para participar en las elecciones celebradasla semana anterior, as como sobre las razones de su voto. Esta encuesta responde a la iniciativa intemacional de estudio comparadobasado en el levantamiento de encuestas electorales relativamentecoincidentes entre 1996 y 1999. La iniciativa internacional surgi delos miembros del International Commitee for Research into Electionsand Representative Democracy (ICORE) y se ha constituido como TheComparativa Study of Electoral Systems en el que participan ms de87 pases. La encuesta levantada por mandato del CIDE contiene dos mdu-los. El primero es la serie de preglmtas comunes que se levantarn enlas elecciones de todos los pases participantes. El segundo mdulocorresponde a un conjunto amplio de preguntas para medir las varia-bles que sustentan diversas hiptesis formuladas por el equipo deinvestigadores que disearon el proyecto para explicar el comporta--miento electoral de los mexicanos en general y una serie de cuestio-namientos espec?cos a la eleccin de julio de 1997.El propsito central de esta nota es describir la naturaleza delproyecto y los fundamentos tericos en los que se enmarca y presentarlos resultados de las preguntas del mdulo internacional de la encuesta.

    Right after the July 6 1997 election, a national survey wasmade - by CIDE's request - on the reasons that motivated the peoplepolled to participate in the elections, as well as on the reasons of theirvote. This survey responds to the international initiative of compara-tive study based on the elaboration of electoral surveys relativelycoincident between 1996 and 1999. This initiative emerged from themembers of the Intemational Commitee for Research into Electionsand Representative Democracy (ICORE), and has constituted itselfas The Comparat-ve Study of Electoral Systems, in which more than87 countries participate.The survey contained two modules. The ?rst constitutes theseries of common questions that will be asked in the elections of all themembers countries. The second module comprehends a wider set ofquestions to mesure the variables that support diverse hypothesisformulated by the reearch team, that designed the project in order toexplain the electoral behavior of Mexicans in general and a series ofpeci?c questionings on the July 1997 election.The core purpose of this note is to describe the nature of theproject and the theoretical foundations in which it is frames, as wellas to present the ?ndings of the questions from the surveys interna-tionale module.
