El paludismo es una enfermedad febril aguda provocada por parásitos del género Plasmodium que se propaga a las personas a través de la picadura de mosquitos del género Anopheles hembra infectados. Hay cinco especies de parásitos causantes del paludismo en el ser humano, siendo dos de ellas: P. falciparum y P. viva, las más peligrosas. Éste último, constituye el parásito del paludismo más letal y el más prevalente en el continente africano, siendo la forma de manifestación más grave con capacidad de producir la muerte en un periodo de 24 horas. Por ello, un diagnóstico precoz y abordaje temprano, contribuyen de manera eficaz a la supervivencia del sujeto portador 1.

Malaria is an acute febrile illness caused by parasites of the genus Plasmodium that is spread to people through the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. There are five species of parasites that cause malaria in humans, two of which, P. falciparum and P. viva, are the most dangerous. The latter is the most lethal malaria parasite and the most prevalent in the African continente, being the most serious form of manifestation with the capacity to cause death in a period of 24 hours. Therefore, an early diagnosis and early approach effectively contribute to the survival of the carrier 1.
