  • Resumen
    • The paper aims at analysing the possible role played by the war in the processes of contact and interconnaisance among the various peoples of Central and Southern Italy during the preRoman age. More specifically, the paper focuses on a particular aspect of this topic: the distinguishability and recognizability of soldiers and troops in war contexts. The question is whether and by what means Roman, Etruscan and Italic soldiers and troops were identifiable and recognizable by their enemies and comrades. According to the Roman perspective (at least with reference to the late Republican age), the analysis of the literary sources seems to testify: a) the possibility of identifying the enemy in war contexts is based on a set of different factors ; b) Etruscan and Italic armour and equipment (genus armorum) had a certain distinctive value in an ethnic and / or community sense.
