Arnulf of Orléans and the "De Cartillagine"

    The De Cartillagine, a fragmentary letter found in only one manuscript (Vatican City, Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, MS Reg. lat. 633, Part 1), is the only surviving work written by Bishop Arnulf of Orléans (970/1-1002) and an important witness to his long-running conflict with Abbo, abbot of Fleury (988-1004). This article summarizes the career of Arnulf and provides a new edition of the De Cartillagine that corrects the previous edition by Philippe Lauer, as well as a complete translation.

    Le De Cartillagine, une lettre fragmentaire préservée dans un seul manuscrit (Cité du Vatican, Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, MS Reg. Lat. 633, Partie 1), est l’unique texte qui nous soit parvenu de l’ensemble de l’œuvre de l’évêque Arnoul d’Orléans (970/1-1002) et de ce fait, un précieux témoin de son long conflit avec l’abbé Abbon de Fleury (988-1004). Cet article résume la carrière d’Arnoul et présente une nouvelle édition du De Cartillagine, qui apporte des corrections à l’édition antérieure de Philippe Lauer, ainsi qu’une traduction complète.
