In the present work the effect of forage specie (maize vs. sorghum) and applicationof a biological additive (commercial inoculant vs. control without additive) on the nutritivevalue, the fermentation quality and the aerobic stability of silages was studied. The forageswere ensiled in laboratory silos in a factorial design (species x additive) with fivereplications. Maize silage showed a lower neutral detergent fiber content and a higherenergy content (milk forage units, UFL) in the dry matter (DM) compared with sorghumsilage (39.7 vs. 61.5 % DM and 0,97 vs. 0,76 UFL kg-1 DM, respectively). The fermentativequality of both crop species was adequate, without appreciable differences betweenadditive treatments. The time of exposure to air for the ensiled forage to reach atemperature gradient over 2 °C above the ambient temperature was significantly higher(40.6 vs. 36.4 h), so was the time to reach the maximum temperature (48.9 vs. 45.8 h) forinoculant-treated silages. It is concluded about the good ensilability of both maize andsorghum forage and the positive effect of the inoculant on the aerobic stability of silages.
