Benedicere vs. maledicere. La exégesis patrística de IOB 1,5 y 2,9*

    El presente trabajo aborda la exégesis patrística latina del verbo hebreo ברך) bārak) en los versículos 1,5 y 2,9 del libro veterotestamentario de Job. Aunque el significado principal de bārak es “bendecir”, este verbo a menudo se interpreta como un eufemismo empleado en el lugar de su antónimo, “maldecir”, que — de acuer-do con la mayor parte de los estudiosos— debía evitarse cuando el objeto de la acción era Dios. Tras ofrecer una panorámica global del fenómeno, se examina la interpretación que de él ofrecieron algunos autores tardoantiguos de la Iglesia de Occidente, a saber: el autor del Anonymi in Iob commentarius, Agustín de Hipona y Gregorio Magno. La recepción del libro de Job en estos autores constituye, de un lado, un eslabón fundamental para enlazar la primera exégesis del texto con las interpretaciones modernas y, de otro, la única tradición conservada de algunas traducciones de la Biblia.

    This paper deals with the exegesis made by the Western Church Fathers of the Hebrew verb ברך) bārak) in verses 1,5 and 2,9 of the Old Testament Book of Iob. Although the main meaning of bārak is ‘to bless’, this verb has often been interpreted as a euphemism used in place of its antonym, ‘to curse’, which—according to the majority opinion—had to be avoided when the object of the action was God. After offering a global overview of the phenomenon, I examine the interpretation offered by some late-antique authors of the Western Church, namely the author of the Anonymi in Iob commentarius, Augustine of Hippo, and Gregory the Great. The reception of the Book of Job in these authors constitutes, on the one hand, a fundamental link between the first exegesis of the text and modern interpretations and, on the other hand the only tradition preserved of some translations of the Bible.
