In the context of post-Tridentine culture, we developed a research project on the parish churches of the former Ecclesiastical District of Feira. Among the 120 churches studied, we found churches of one, two and three nave.Analyzing the tridentine conciliar determinations, the diocesan synodical determinations of Porto, the proposals of Carlos Borromeo and the treatises produced and publicized from the sixteenth century, there was no architectonic or artistic foundation for the explanation of churches with two nave.This study on the churches of two nave tries to clarify their function starting from the analysis of some dozens of religious buildings in Portugal and their contextualization in the international architecture.

No contexto da cultura pós-tridentina, desenvolvemos um projeto de investigação sobre as igrejas paroquiais da antiga Comarca Eclesiástica da Feira. Dentre as 120 igrejas estudadas, encontrámos igrejas de uma, duas e três naves.Analisando as determinações conciliares tridentinas, as determinações sinodais diocesanas do Porto, as propostas de Carlos Borromeu e a tratadística produzida e publicitada a partir do século XVI, não se encontrou fundamentação arquitetónica nem artística para a explicação de igrejas com duas naves.Este estudo sobre as igrejas de duas naves procura esclarecer a sua função partindo da análise de algumas dezenas de edifícios religiosos em Portugal e da sua contextualização na arquitetura internacional.
