Los Tratados del Astrolabio fueron textos esenciales para comprender y enseñar la estructura y el uso de esos instrumentos, presentes tanto en el ámbito científico como en el político, civil y religioso de las sociedades islámicas, hebreas y cristianas de la Edad Media. La dimensión simbólica del astrolabio como imagen del Universo y su evidente atractivo estético interesó al poder, pero también su capacidad para medir el tiempo y realizar medidas topográficas. Por eso se promovió la construcción de astrolabios y de sus textos explicativos. Está documentada la enseñanza del uso y la estructura del astrolabio, tanto en las madrasas islámicas, como en las universidades del occidente cristiano.

The Treatises on the Astrolabe played an essential role on the understanding of the structure of these instruments and their use. The Islamic, Hebrew and Christian societies focussed on the various aspects of astrolabes useful to the scientific communities but also to the civil and religious power. The symbolism hold by the astrolabe as an image of the Universe and their aesthetic features, were appreciated by the hierarchy of the medieval society as much as its capacity to reckon time and to make topographical measurements. Those uses justify the promotion of the astrolabes and their explanatory texts. The teaching of the use and structure of the astrolabe took place, both in the Islamic madrasas and in the western Christian universities.
