    The process of industrialization and deep transformation of the city between the inauguration of the railroad, 1884, and the great espadrille strike of 1903, determined the construction of the local identity in Elx. The purpose of this article is to analyze the origin of La Festa (tradition), the palm grove (landscape), and local history as differential and prestigious cultural elements, in the regional, national, and international context, that Pedro Ibarra re-functionalizes and adapts to the new contemporary society of Elx. The result is the construction of a collective and cohesive consciousness of belonging to the city, precipitated by the threat of the morbid cholera epidemic, which at times overcomes the class dialectics between the bourgeoisie and the working class.

    El procés d’industrialització i transformació profunda de la ciutat entre la inauguració del ferrocarril, 1884, i la gran vaga d’espardenyers de 1903, determina la construcció de la identitat local a Elx. L’objectiu del present article és analitzar l’origen de la Festa (tradició), el palmerar (paisatge) i la història local com a elements culturals diferencials i de prestigi, en el context regional, nacional i internacional, que Pere Ibarra refuncionalitza i adapta a la nova societat contemporània il·licitana. El resultat és la construcció d’una consciència col·lectiva i cohesionada de pertinença a la ciutat, precipitada per l’amenaça de l’epidèmia de cholera morbus, que a vegades supera les dialèctiques de classe entre burgesia i classe obrera.
