Resumen de Las matronas y los usos políticos del sheshand en dos historias (ficcionales) sobre la isla de San Andrés

Este texto analiza la manera en que el chisme, conocido en algunos lugares de la isla de San Andrés como sheshand y entendido como un acto de habla con potencialidad política que escenifica las tensiones narrativas que marcan la política y la cultura en el Caribe, se manifiesta por medio de la acción de dos personajes de matronas caribeñas: la big mamma en la obra de teatro Henrietta de la Fundación Teatral Trasatlántico y Lorenza Vallejo en Los Pañamanes de Fanny Buitrago. Las dos obras establecen y dan cuenta de un alto contenido histórico en sus narrativas en clave femenina y caribeña, ubicándose a su vez en el contexto de dos momentos icónicos en la historia de la isla de San Andrés: la declaración de emancipación en 1849 y la declaratoria de Puerto Libre en 1953.

This paper deals with the way in which gossip, known in some places on the island of San Andrés as sheshand and understood as an act of speech with political potential that stages the narrative tensions that mark politics and culture in the Caribbean, is manifested by means of the action of thecharacters of two Caribbean matrons: the big mamma in the play Henrietta by Transatlantic Theater and Lorenza Vallejo in Los Pañamanes by Fanny Buitrago. In a Caribbean feminine key, the two works establish and reveal a high historical content in their narratives by staging the context of two iconic moments in the history of the island of San Andrés: The declaration of emancipation in 1849 and the declaration of Free Port in 1953.
