    The history of modern and contemporary art is understood through its exhibitions, moments when works ‘happen’. It is by means of exhibitions that art introduces itself, is received, and perceived: it is thank to exhibitions that works form a set that is selected and justified by curators and by the networks that foster them. Thus, his-toricizing exhibitions has been a relevant contribution to the analysis of contem-porary art system and artistic processes. For this reason, this article contains two parts. The first one aims at stressing the role exhibitions play in historiography and in the way artistic phenomena themselves are conceived. Based on two important temporary exhibitions featured at Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, the second part reflects on a few changes in the way African art is seen: Magiciens de la terre, 1989, and the touring africa remix, first shown at the Museum Kunst Palast, in 2004, and then at Centre Georges Pompidou and Hayward Gallery, in 2005, at the Mori Art Museum, in 2006, and at the Johannesburg Art Gallery, in 2007.

    A história da arte moderna e contem-porânea vem sendo compreendida por meio de suas exposições, momento em que as obras “acontecem”. É pela exposição que a arte se apresenta, é recebida e percebida: as obras formam um conjunto selecionado e justifica-do pela curadoria e pelas redes que as fomentam. assim, historicizar as exposições vem sendo um aporte rele-vante para a análise do sistema e dos processos artísticos contemporâneos. tendo isso em vista, este artigo está dividido em duas partes. a primeira tem como objetivo ressaltar o papel que as exposições ocupam na historiografia e na própria concepção dos fenômenos artísticos. a segunda procura realizar uma reflexão sobre algumas mudanças na maneira de encarar a arte africana, tomando por base duas importantes exposições temporárias acolhidas no centre georges Pompidou em Paris: Magiciens de la terre, de 1989, e a itine-rante Africa remix, abrigada primeira-mente no Museum Kunst Palast, em 2004, e, em seguida, no centre georges Pompidou e na hayward gallery, em 2005, no Mori art Museum, em 2006, e na Johannesburg art gallery, em 2007
