In this article we briefly present the Bohr model with its main developments and the importance of this modelfor the beginning of quantum mechanics. We consider the context in which Bohr’s theory is developed andits great success in explaining the structure of matter. We discuss its generalization through the introductionof quantization rules and the importance of the correspondence principle. We show how the problem of theinteraction between atoms and electromagnetic radiation pushed Bohr’s theory to reach its limits. We alsobriefly show theBKStheory (Bohr-Kramers-Slater) with which the inconsistencies of the theory are alsoevident. However, we emphasize that Bohr’s theory provides Heisenberg with the tools to formulate the firstpaper on quantum mechanics.
