The essay aims to examine Franco Fortini’s relationship with Dante’s work through three perspectives. The first concerns the ‘function’ that the poet of the Rime had in the Bildung of the author, within the hermetic florentine culture of the Thirties and Forties. The second perspective illustrates the importance of the figura in the sense of Auerbach, to which Fortini dedicates an intense and protracted reflection starting from the 1950s, and which is assimilated as the conceptual structure of his poetry. The third perspective concerns metrics: in fact, we take into consideration a 1993 study, still little known but important, on Dante’s terzina.
