    This paper has a dual objective. It firstly sets out to compare the way in which referential noun phrases give rise to different types of anaphoric expressions in French and English. It then goes on to identify and detail the different strategies used to provide qualitative information about the referents introduced. We demonstrate that French and English have specific preferences: first with regard to the choice of categories of referential expressions, with French avoiding repetition and therefore making far greater use than English of redenomination, i.e. using « unfaithful » or lexical anaphors. As for the coding of qualitative information, French favours initial sentence position, whereas English tends to place this information after the verb more. We adopt a textual perspective in order to explain the observed differences

    Cet article a un double objectif. Il vise d’une part, à comparer la manière dont les expressions nominales référentielles donnent lieu à différents types d’expressions anaphoriques en français et en anglais. Il identifie et détaille d’autre part, les différentes stratégies utilisées pour fournir des informations qualitatives sur les référents introduits. Nous montrons que le français et l’anglais ont des préférences spécifiques : d’abord en ce qui concerne le choix des catégories d’expressions référentielles, le français évitant la répétition et faisant donc beaucoup plus usage que l’anglais de la redénomination, c’est-à-dire des anaphores « infidèles » ou lexicales. Quant au codage des informations qualitatives, le français privilégie la position initiale de la phrase, alors que l’anglais a plus tendance à placer ces informations après le verbe. Nous adoptons une perspective textuelle pour expliquer les différences observées.
