In this article we analyze the development and changes of the university and secondary student movement from the 90s to 2020 divided into three periods: the rearticulation of the movement in the context of the post-dictatorship (1990-2010), from the fight for free education to the feminist student movement (2011-2018), and the role of the movement in the social outbreak of October 2019. In analytical terms, we use the theory of the political process, a perspective that allows connecting collective action with the political area. As a hypothesis, it is argued that the popular revolt of 2019 cannot be understood without challenging the student movement, because this will reveal, at different times, the fissures of the Chilean educational model as well as the economic and political model inherited from the Pinochet dictatorship, and with it, revealing the democratizing potential of the student movement
