    Urbano is a Tuscan novella, which narrates the adventurous youth of an illegitimate son of the Emperor Federico Barbarossa, his marriage with the Sultan’s daughter, the betrayal of the couple by some treacherous merchants and the final recognition by the Emperor. Quite successful in the 15th and 16th centuries, it was attributed to Boccaccio in some manuscripts as well as in its first printed edition (Bologna ca. 1490), and further on up to the 19th century, despite the objections put forward by learned men such as Vincenzio Borghini since as early as the middle of 16th century.

    For the first time, this essay thoroughly investigates the textual tradition of the tale, its circulation between Tuscany and the Northern Italy, and the emergence of the false attribution to Boccaccio.

    La novella Urbano narra le vicende di un figlio illegittimo dell’imperatore Federico Barbarossa, sposo della figlia del Sultano in seguito alle macchinazioni di alcuni mercanti che poi tradiscono i due giovani, e la finale agnizione da parte dell’imperatore. Il testo ebbe un certo successo fra Quattro e Cinquecento e fu attribuito a Boccaccio da alcuni manoscritti e dalla princeps (Bologna ca. 1490), attribuzione che si mantenne fino all’Ottocento, nonostante il parere contrario ben presto espresso da Vincenzio Borghini.

    L’articolo affronta per la prima volta in modo sistematico la tradizione testuale della novella, la sua diffusione in Toscana e nel Nord Italia, l’affiorare e l’imporsi della falsa attribuzione a Boccaccio.
