    El presente artículoestá enfocado en el análisis de tresfuentes jesuitas,por medio de las cuales busco reconstruir la historia de la viruelaa partir del miedo a la muerte y sus distintas manifestaciones. Asimismo, expongo los antídotos terrenales y celestiales que se plantean para combatir esta pandemia, entre los que se aprecia con mayor poder los celestia-les. Con esto último se constata que detrás del discurso jesuítico se halla un mensaje morali-zante en el que se justifica el declive demográfico como producto de la venganza de Dios por el comportamiento pecaminoso de los guaraníes.

    This paperis focused on the analysis of three Jesuit sources, through whichI seek to reconstruct the history of smallpoxbased on the fear of death and its different manifesta-tions. Furthermore, I addressthe earthly and heavenly antidotes that wereproposed to combat this pandemic, among which the heavenly ones wereregarded as more valid. Adding to this premise, it is arguedthat behind the Jesuit discourse there is a moralizing message in which the demographic decline is justified as a product of God’s revenge uponthe sinful behavior of the Guarani.
