    Tras sesenta años de su entrada en vigor, el Tratado Antártico ha sido y será un instrumento jurídico internacional fundamental para la administración del Continente Blanco. Este artículo expone cómo se originó, en qué consiste y cuál ha sido su evolución. Mediante un método descriptivo, se abordan cada uno de los artículos del Tratado Antártico que constituyen los principios y mecanismos de protección jurídica de la Antártida, así como los principales ins-trumentos internacionales que constituyen el Sistema del Tratado Antártico. El objetivo del artículo es brindarle al lector una visión general de un tratado complejo, pero que ha trascen-dido a los rigores de la Guerra Fría y que se ha mantenido vigente hasta nuestros días. El principal hallazgo consiste en que pese a los intereses antagónicos que pueden darse respecto de la Antártida, el Tratado Antártico con sus regulaciones sui generis ha permitido que ese continente se use de manera pacífica y se dedique a la paz y la ciencia.

    Sixty years after its entry into force, the Antarctic Treaty has proved to be and will continue to be a fundamental international legal instrument for the administration of the White Conti-nent. This article explains how it originated, what it consists of and how it has evolved. Each of the articles of the Antarctic Treaty that constitute the principles and mechanisms of legal protection of Antarctica, as well as the main international instruments that make up the Ant-arctic Treaty System, are addressed using a descriptive methodology. The objective of the article is to provide the reader with an overview of such a complex treaty –one, however, that has transcended the rigors of the Cold War and has remained in force to this day. The main finding is that, despite the antagonistic interests that may exist with respect to Antarctica, the Antarctic Treaty with its sui generisregulations has allowed that continent to be used peace-fully and for the sake of peace and science.
