Resumen de Cuando nuestros representantes son injustos

  ¿Son responsables los ciudadanos de las legislaciones y políticas públicas injustas que aprueban sus representantes? ¿Qué tipo de responsabilidad es ésta? Defendemos aquí que, mientras que la representación ejecutiva y legislativa sustantiva genera una responsabilidad moral retrospectiva en la ciudadanía, la representación formal genera una responsabilidad moral prospectiva. Además, sostenemos que es más importante concentrarse en atender la responsabilidad moral prospectiva asociada con la representación formal y, por último, que dicha responsabilidad es un subconjunto de deberes políticos de los ciudadanos para resistir y modificar las decisiones o políticas injustas de sus gobernantes. Estos deberes tienen tres características: se individualizan en cada ciudadano en función del rol social que éste desempeña, son abiertos y son derrotables por ciertas consideraciones morales y prudenciales.

  Are citizens responsible for the unjust legislation and public policy that their representatives pass? What type of responsibility could this be? We defend here that, while substantive executive and legislative representation creates moral backward-looking responsibility on the citizenry, formal representation creates moral forward-looking responsibility. We also argue that it is more important to focus on the adscription of the moral forward-looking responsibility associated to formal representation, and that such responsi-bility should be understood as a citizens’ subset of political duties to resist and modify the injustices that their representatives bring about. Such duties have three main features: they are individualized on each citizen according to her social role, they are open and they are defeasible by certain moral and prudential considerations.
