    The idea of the article to discuss the apparent duality between the individual and society that seems to accompany sociology, in several authors and theories, during different historical moments, under the format of an interaction that could be designated as the 'paradox of freedom and constraint". The argument developed is that such a sociological theme that gives a different priority to the individual and social levels makes part of the history of the epistemic field, characterizing a pendular movement. It is a none linear course, influenced by philosophic and political conceptions built in different moments, with repercussions on the theoretical models that shape the field of the social sciences. By developing those reflections. the article makes a reference to classic and contemporary authors that were dedicated particularly to the interactions between the individual and society, still defining, as an example, the discussion around individual action, considered to be subject of rights, present in the sociological literature of social movements.

    A idéia do artigo é discutir a aparente dualidade entre indivíduo e sociedade que parece acompanhar a sociologia, em vários autores e teorias, em diferentes momentos históricos, sob a forma de uma interação que poderia ser designada como o "paradoxo da liberdade e do constrangimento". O argumento desenvolvido no artigo é o de que as tematizações sociológicas que priorizam de forma diferenciada os planos individual e social fazem parte da história desse campo do saber, caracterizando uma espécie de movimento pendular. Trata-se de um percurso não linear, influenciado por concepções filosóficas e políticas construídas em diferentes momentos, com repercussões sobre os modelos teóricos que integram o campo das ciências sociais. No desenvolvimento das reflexões, o artigo reporta-se a autores clássicos e contemporâneos que se dedicaram particularmente às interações entre indivíduo e sociedade, delimitando ainda, como exemplo, a discussão sobre a ação de indivíduos, considerados sujeitos de direitos, presente na literatura sociológica sobre os movimentos sociais.
