    • The Italian language had a significant presence in the Ottoman Empire for many centuries, leading to a range of resources devoted to its study. This paper explores Lugat-i Talyan, the first Italian grammar written in Ottoman Turkish in the late 18th century by an Ottoman poet and whirling dervish named Esrar Dede. The paper describes the broad characteristics of this grammar while giving an overview of the spread of Italian within the Ottoman Empire
