Víctor Català is one of the most prominent literary figures in the Modernist literary movement in Catalonia and, by extension, of Catalan literature. Her prose, which did not avoid digging into the gloomiest aspects of reality, was not always understood by critics at the turn of the century. The magazine Joventut, and especially its literary critic, Jeroni Zanné, did value her work (especially the Drames rurals). I propose that Zanné’s support was key to encouraging her to pursue a literary career and to steer her towards prose.
