Details about Bourdelle's early career (1861–1929) are still not well known. Between his arrival in Paris in 1884 and the 1910 Salon, where the exhibition of Heracles the archer finally brought him fame, there is a long period when he was working in Rodin's studio and came under the influence of artistic currents then in fashion. The important collection of archival material in the Bourdelle Museum, including his bulky correspondance, enables to analyse how his work developed and highlights the significance of some of his work produced at that time whose trace has sometimes been lost.
