Sartre in the Novel Il Consiglio d’Egitto: the Torture and the Engagement · The Council of Egypt contains a reference to La Question, a book, with the introduction of Sartre, which denounces french torture in Algeria. The Council of Egypt is an innovative twentieth-century historical novel, which anticipates traits of later sciascian works. In its final part the character Di Blasi is tortured and sentenced to death, so that it can be considered a rewriting of La Question. The article identifies the meaning of the sartrian presence in the novel in relation to the idea of social engagement in Sciascia during the 60s and 70s, reading texts written for his candidacy to the city council in Palermo.
