    Nuestro trabajo pretende aportar nuevos datos y testimonios sobre la relación entre militares, política y negocios en Filipinas en la primera mitad del siglo XVIII, a través de la carrera y vicisitudes de un oficial del ejército en el archipiélago, el general Pedro Zacarías Villarreal. Para ello, veremos la biografía del personaje y sus diferentes destinos en la milicia y en la administración, sus conflictos con las autoridades civiles, etc. Asimismo, comentaremos las características de los diversos cargos que ocupó, lo que nos ilustrará sobre el funcionamiento de ciertos puestos en el ejército poco estudiados hasta ahora, tales como las castellanías de las fortalezas o los gobiernos de algunos presidios, por ejemplo, el de Zamboanga en la isla de Mindanao. El artículo se basa en la documentación original conservada en el Archivo General de Indias (AGI) y en la bibliografía existente sobre el tema.

    This paper aims to provide new data and testimonies on the relationship between the military, politics and business in the Philippines in the first half of the eighteenth century through the career and vicissitudes of an army officer in the archipelago: General Pedro Zacarias Villarreal. It considers Villareal’s life and his different posts in government and the militia, as well as his conflicts with the civil authorities. It examines the nature of the various positions he held, illustrating the operation of certain little-studied army posts, such as fortress castellanías or the governance of presidios like Zamboanga on the island of Mindanao. The article is based on the documentation held in the General Archive of the Indies (AGI) and existing bibliography on the subject.
