  La listeriosis es una infección causada por el agente Listeria monocytogenes, una bacteria ubicua con ciclo de vida intracelular y características epidemiológicas particulares. La infección se contrae mayoritariamente por vía oral, y ciertas poblaciones son particularmente propensas a contraerla. Las mujeres gestantes son una población vulnerable, ya que tienen 17 veces más riesgo de contraer la infección y además pueden potencialmente presentar consecuencias fetales sumamente severas, incluyendo la muerte fetal en hasta una tercera parte de casos. El cuadro clínico de dicha infección puede ser muy diverso y el diagnóstico de la misma es difícil si no se tiene una sospecha clínica temprana. Existen múltiples líneas de tratamiento antibiótico adecuadas para las diferentes condiciones del paciente, que disminuyen la morbimortalidad maternofetal. Al ser una infección de transmisión a través de alimentos, es potencialmente prevenible, y por tanto, el adecuado manejo de alimentos y aseo de manos constituyen las principales medidas para la prevención de la enfermedad.

  Listeriosis is an infection caused by the agent Listeria monocytogenes, a ubiquitous bacteria with an intracellular life cycle and particular epidemiologic characteristics. The infection is contracted majorly through oral ingestion, and certain populations are particularly prone to get infected. Pregnant women are a vulnerable population, since they have 17 times more risk of contracting the infection and they can potentially develop extremely severe fetal consequences. The clinical presentation of the infection can be very diverse and the diagnosis is difficult if one does not have an early clinical suspicion. There are multiple lines of antibiotic treatment suitable for the different conditions of the patient, which reduce maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. As it is a foodborne infection, it is potentially preventable; therefore, proper food handling and hand hygiene are the main measures for disease prevention.
