  Entre 1471 y 1704 existió en Gibraltar un convento de San Francisco. Hasta finalesdel siglo XVI fue la única comunidad de religiosos regulares establecida en aquella ciudad,por lo que su influencia en la formación y la vida cotidiana de los gibraltareños debió deser de considerable importancia. Muchos de éstos profesaron en aquel convento o en otrosde la Orden, ocupando prelaturas, desarrollando actividad literaria, acudiendo a misiones enTierra Santa y América. Con base en los libros sacramentales de Gibraltar, conservados hoyen la parroquia de San Roque (Cádiz), y otras fuentes hemos elaborado la muestra de ochofranciscanos gibraltareños de los siglos XV al XVIII.

  Between 1471 and 1704 there was a Franciscan convent on Gibraltar. Towardsthe end of the sixteenth century it was the only community of regular clergy that had beenestablished in that town, as a result of which its influence on the education and the daily lifeof the people of Gibraltar must have been of considerable importance. Many of these peopleprofessed in that convent or in others of the Order, occupying prelatures, being involved inliterary activity and travelling to missions in the Holy Land or the Americas. Drawing on thesacramental books of Gibraltar, today held in the parish church of San Roque (Cádiz), andother sources we have drawn up this sample of eight portraits of Gibraltarian Franciscans fromthe fifteenth to eighteenth centuries.
