    En esta contribución se pretende, en primer lugar, recopilar y ordenar lo que recoge la bibliografía que me ha precedido; el análisis de nuevas fuentes ha permitido añadir al dosier tradicional otras relaciones e hijos de los reyes hasta ahora totalmente desconocidos. En segundo lugar, analizar la categoría de las amantes, cuándo son presentes –si en contemporaneidad a las esposas o no–, el trato que reciben en vida del monarca y después de su muerte, así como el comportamiento con los respectivos hijos.

    In this piece, I offer, first, a bibliographic survey of earlier work on royal sons and lovers, showing how analysis of new sources and archival research can extend the established corpus. Secondly, I analyse the category of “lover”, exploring when monarchs were said to have taken a lover, whether during the life of their wives or otherwise, how these lovers were treated both while the king was alive and after his death, and royal attitudes to illegitimate offspring.
