Quelle place l’élégie et l’élégiaque occupent-ils dans le théâtre romantique ? À l’heure où les genres de la poésie alluvionnent ceux du théâtre, la circulation de l’élégie dans les pièces du répertoire romantique participe d’un fructueux dialogue esthétique. Cet article étudie la manière dont l’élégiaque contribue à l’émotion que procure le spectacle romantique. Les traces élégiaques participent en effet de la qualité sensible d’une oeuvre dramatique, structurant également la caractérisation des personnages. Mais à l’inverse, la prétendue féminité qu’on associe à l’élégie peut se muer en un défaut, les émotions prenant le pas sur le « drame » et la conduite de l’action

What is the role of elegy and the elegiac in Romantic theatre ? At a time when the poetic genres are nourishing those of the theatre, the circulation of the elegy within the plays of the Romantic repertoire is part of a fruitful aesthetic dialogue. This paper focuses on the way the elegiac is part of the emotion produced by the Romantic performance. Elegiac intertextualities participate in the sensibilities of a dramatic work, at the same time as they structure its characters. But conversely, the so-called femininity usually associated with elegy can become a failing, emotions taking control of the “drama” and of the development of action
