The study of collections of textiles in 19th century France allows us to question the definition of the role of the industrial museum or the museum of art andindustry that appeared in the 1830s. The collections of samples contributed to the development and such museums and gave birth to specialized institutuons in Lyon, Milhouse, Roubaix and Saint Etienne, to only mention those examples still functioning today. These museums and their collections were thought out as complements to the schools of drawing, participating in the formation and the inspiration of the draftsmen. The emulative and utilitarian dimension to these museums was coupled at the end of the century with the appearance of a taste for ancient fabrics, arousing the interest of lovers of period pieces and of art historians who contributed to writing a history of ancient fabrics. The collections of textiles thus participated in the evolution of the industrial museum into that of the museum of decorative arts that developed between 1880 and 1930.
