En 1976 María Casares regresó a España para interpretar una obra dramática de Rafael Alberti. Era su primera visita tras cuarenta años de exilio. Había realizado una extensa carrera sobre los escenarios franceses y también en el cine, pero su trabajo apenas era conocido en España. Pesaba más su condición de hija de Santiago Casares, Primer Mi- nistro al inicio de la Guerra Civil. El reencuentro no fue un éxito artístico. Volvería en ocasiones posteriores de forma más discreta. El artículo analiza el contexto político y teatral en el momento del retorno y revisa las críticas recibidas en la prensa española así como la mitificación de que fue objeto.

In 1976 María Casares returned to Spain to perform a dramatic work by Rafael Alberti. It was her first visit after forty years of exile. She had had an extensive career on the French stage and also in the cinema, but her work was hardly known in Spain. She weighed more her condition as the daughter of Santiago Casares, Prime Minister at the beginning of the Civil War. The reunion was not an artistic success. She would return to Barcelona on three subsequent occasions, always as a theater performer but more discreetly. The article analyzes the political and theatrical context at the time of her return and reviews the criticism received in the Spanish press, as well as the mythologization to which she was subjected
