    El cuatomate es una planta silvestre en proceso de domesticacióny con alto potencial económico en la Mixteca Baja Poblana; porello, el objetivo de este estudio fue sistematizar el conocimientocampesino sobre su importancia, diversidad, manejo y perspectivas.Se aplicó un cuestionario a 51 productores seleccionadospor el método “bola de nieve”, y se encontró que el cuatomatees importante para todos los productores de la Mixteca BajaPoblana, debido a su valor de uso y de cambio. Existen tres tiposde cuatomate fácilmente identificables por el color del fruto:verde, blanco o cenizo, y moteado. El verde tiene mayores perspectivaspara su producción comercial. El traspatio es el espacioproductivo más importante para la especie, que ha permitidosu reproducción, distribución, conservación y difusión a travésde prácticas de manejo realizadas por toda la familia, entreellas siembra, estacado, trasplante, tutoreo, riego, fertilización,cosecha, compra-venta de fruto y plantas. La dificultad de obtenersólo plantas fértiles y con calidad para la propagación delcuatomate, es uno de los principales problemas que limitan suproducción; sin embargo, la mayoría de los productores estándispuestos a comprarlas y pagar un sobreprecio si se les garantizala fertilidad y calidad de las mismas.

    Cuatomate is a wild plant in process of domestication andwith high economic potential in Puebla’s Low Mixteca region;therefore, the objective of this study was to systematize peasantknowledge about its importance, diversity, management andprospects. A questionnaire was applied to 51 producers selectedby the “snowball” method, and it was found that cuatomateis important to all producers in Puebla’s Low Mixteca region,because of its use and change value. There are three types ofcuatomate that are easily identifiable by the color of their fruit:green, white or ashen, and spotted. The green fruit has higherprospects for commercial production. The backyard is the mostimportant productive space for the species, which has allowedits reproduction, distribution, conservation and diffusionthrough management practices carried out by the whole family,among them sowing, staking, transplanting, tutoring, irrigating,fertilizing, harvesting, and purchasing-selling fruit and plants.The difficulty in obtaining only fertile plants with quality forcuatomate propagation is one of the main problems that limitits production; however, most of the producers are willing tobuy them and pay a surcharge if their fertility and quality isguaranteed.
