    El objetivo del presente artículo es entender ,en parte, el contexto histórico de la formación de las colecciones que mantiene actualmente el Departamento de Biología de la Escuela Politécnica Nacional, así como analizar el motivo que originó el fraccionamiento de sus colecciones en el pasado y el uso que en la actualidad se les da. De igual manera se busca argumentar el rol que cumplen universidades e instituciones públicas y privadas en cuanto a la conservación y divulgación de este patrimonio natural y cultural, considerado como verdadero legado de conocimiento natural e histórico de nuestro país. Se busca también identificar potencialidades y desafíos que involucra el adecuado manejo de las colecciones biológicas, logrando una mejor interacción entre el público y las colecciones, fortaleciendo su existencia y explorando nuevas aplicaciones en diferentes sectores de la sociedad. La investigación bibliográfica, las entrevistas a curadores y encargados de otras instituciones y finalmente la revisión del repositorio de las colecciones del Departamento de Biología de la Escuela Politécnica Nacional, han permitido tener una visión panorámica y sistemática del problema y conocer los posibles motivos del fraccionamiento de dichas colecciones.

    The objective of this article is to understand, in part, the historical context of the formation of the collections currently maintained by the Department of Biology of the National Polytechnic School, as well as analyzing the reason that originated the division of its collections in the past and the use that is currently given to them. It also seeks to argue the role of universities and public and private institutions in the conservation and dissemination of this natural and cultural heritage, considered as true legacies of natural and historical knowledge of our country. It also seeks to identify potentialities and challenges involved in the adequate management of biological collections, achieving a better interaction between the public and the collections, strengthening their existence and exploring new applications in different sectors of society. The bibliographical research, the interviews with curators and finally the review of the repository of the collections of the Department of Biology of the National Polytechnic School, have allowed us to have a panoramic and systematic vision of the problem and to know the possible reasons for the division of these collections.
