In his Journey through a part of Spain, Friedrich G. Baumgärtner describes the last period of the reign of Charles III. He presents a stable country, which does not yet perceive the risks it is running on the eve of the French Revolution. In the Northern provinces he notices the connection between the deforestation of the countryside and the decline of agriculture. On the contrary, Madrid is presented as the capital and centre of a very self-assured empire. What mostly impresses the author is the urban frame of modern Madrid: the Puerta de Alcalá, the Puerta del Sol, the Paseo del Prado, the Palacio Real, et cetera. Popular culture (traditional dances and costumes, buskers, the Fandango) is forgotten just as little as the visitor’s contacts to the high society of Madrid. At the same time, the text takes note of the signals of the modern technical civilisation in statu nascendi (coalmines, metal processing, textiles, et cetera) and never avoids disputed topics like the inquisition, the Corrida, the monetary crisis, et cetera
