    En el trasfondo de las novelas de Galdós se perciben nítidamente las perplejidades y conjeturas espirituales del autor. Por otro lado, el espiritualismo como doctrina y la caridad como actitud son prácticas muy cercanas a su biografía. Es más, son temas recurrentes de su literatura la Iglesia como institución y lo religioso como creencia y fundamento humano. Su formación, su talante liberal, la tensión del ambiente posromántico y positivista que lo rodeaba, su inquietud metafísica y aun mística alimentada con el krausismo, fueron incitando en él, progresivamente, el motivo de la incógnita de la sociedad española y de la intimidad del hombre en ella.

    In the background of Galdós’ novels one can clearly perceive the author’s spiritual perplexities and guesses. On the other hand, spiritualism as a doctrine and charity as an attitude are practices very close to his biography. Moreover, the church as an institution and the religious as a belief and human foundation are recurring themes in his literature. His education, his liberal disposition, the tension of the post-romantic and positivist en-vironment that surrounded him, his metaphysical and even mystical restlessness nourished by Krausism, progressively incited in him the motif of the unknown of Spanish society and the intimacy of man in it.
